Book 14 of 27 in the New Testament — Clarifying the Day of the Lord.
2 Thessalonians follows up on the first letter, correcting a misunderstanding that had unsettled the church — the belief that the ‘day of the Lord’ had already come. Paul clarifies the sequence of end-time events and urges the church not to be shaken by false teaching on the subject. He also addresses believers who had stopped working, apparently convinced Christ's return was so imminent that ordinary responsibilities no longer mattered, telling them firmly to get back to work. The letter balances hope for Christ's return with a call to steady, faithful living meanwhile.
“Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:”King James Version
Paul prays God would fulfill their every good purpose and act of faith.
“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”King James Version
Believers are urged to stand firm and hold to the teachings passed on to them.
“But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.”King James Version
The Lord is faithful and will strengthen and protect his people.
“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”King James Version
Paul's rule: the one unwilling to work should not eat.
“Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.”King James Version
Paul prays the Lord of peace would give them peace at all times.
